Fahey, Roy and Matheson Take Home Feature Wins on Fredericton Inn Night!!!
Posted on July 6th, 2008Fredericton, NB - As the weather hits the high twenties off the track, the racing heats up at Speedway 660. Tonight’s feature’s held some of the newest additions to podium finishes; not to mention first timers to victory lane for 2008. The ladies got the opportunity to show the boys how racing is done and the mascots got their moment to shine.
In the Coast Tire Street Stock Division the #88 of Brian Fox looked as if he was going for a Robin’s Inn Hat Trick Award after winning his heat and dash but due to a misfortunate spin on lap eight in the feature, Fox had to settle ninth. Matt Matheson in the #2 has been destined since the beginning of the season to grab his first feature win of 2008. Matheson started the street stock feature in the seventh position and flew past numerous drivers to challenge the #11 of Rodney Ness. Ness lost the lead to Matheson on lap twelve while Rick Cashol in the #54 seen the opportunity to fly into second. Cashol then fought Matheson for the remaining nine laps, taking a charge every lap to get closer and closer to first. Matheson was to strong for the past champion and finally took home the feature win he has been looking for. Cashol had to settle for second while the 2007 champion, Mike Francis in the #23, rounded out the top three.
In the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman Division the #70 of Dave Biggar looked as if he may too take home a Robin’s Inn Hat Trick award but had to settle for fifth in the feature. All the fans that left the Speedway tonight had the same thought on their mind “That was some good and tight racing tonight in the sportsman feature” and they were right. Tonight’s sportsman feature was tight, side by side racing between the #26 of Brent Roy and the #34 of Randy Moore. Beginning on lap seven, Roy edged up beside Moore to make his presence known. For a continuous 23 laps the pair would swap the lead with the second place car only inches behind when they crossed the line. In the end only one driver can take home the first place prize and tonight the honour goes the #26 of Brent Roy, taking home his first ever feature win. Taking in the second place position was the #34 of Randy Moore and after having a great weekend last weekend, Cal Hatfield in the #11 rounded out the top three with a podium finish this week.
After having a few weekends off, the Irving Lubricants Pro Stock division returned to continue their points racing. Greg Fahey didn’t have the full length of time off as most drivers. Fahey competed in the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour 100 last weekend and had a fairly well finish. This week he took it to the next level and drove his way to a first place podium finish. It wasn’t an easy cruise though because he had the #87 of Matt Harris and the #8 of Hal O’Neal not far behind his back bumper, making their way. Fahey was strong enough to hold on for the remainder of the race to take home a first place podium finish while Hal O’Neal took home second and Harris rounded out the top three.
Aside from the main racing events for tonight’s schedule, Speedway 660 hosted the first ever mascot challenge. In the mascot challenge, five mascots from different companies took part in various challenges during the intermission session. These challenges included: shooting the t-shirt cannon at a target, rolling a tire down the front stretch, doing a touchdown dance, and driving and RC Car around pylons in a certain amount of time. Mascots that took part in the event included: Hugs and Kisses of Jim Gilbert’s Wheels and Deals, Huggie the Lion from the Lions Club, Curly Top from DQ and our very own Speedway the moose. After rigorous training throughout the week, Speedway came out on top to calm his victory at his home track. Finishing in second was Curly Top of DQ and rounding out the top three was Huggie.
The Ladies were given a spotlight tonight in the Powder Puff race. Each year there is one special event on the schedule that gives the ladies the opportunity to show the guys how its done. In tonight’s Powder Puff race only three ladies took part in the event which meant there were an easy three podium finishes. Taking home the first place podium finish tonight was the #05 of Barb Gaddess, Amanda Turnbull in the #1 took home the second place position while the #54 of Lynn Cashol rounded out the top three.
Tune into Speedway 660 next weekend for the second “Best of the Best” series race. This will be the final opportunity for driver’s outside of the Irving Lubricants Pro Stock division to get some track time before the Peterbilt 250 in September. Make sure you swing by the Geary woods next Saturday for some WicKID family fun.
