Thibeau takes COAST TIRE 100 and Sweeps the Series!!
Posted on July 13th, 2008Fredericton, NB - Speedway 660 wraps up another night of great racing in the Geary woods, having many winners walking away with great prizes. Tonight’s event featured, yet again, some newest additions to podium finishers. The event also gave the fans an opportunity to take home some BIG prizes with Purelator Food Bank Bingo. Purelator and Speedway 660 joined forces to take on the fight against hunger with a Bingo night in support of the Fredericton food Bank. The winners of tonight’s bingo games took home either an Ipod Nano or an Itouch and overall had a great time playing throughout the evening.
Aside of the crowd games, the drivers in each division put on another exciting show for the fans, as they do every week. In the Irving Lubricants Pro Stock division, the big boys got their final shot at the last big race before the Peterbilt 250 with the Coast Tire “Best of the Best” series final race tonight. Returning “Best of the Best” race #1 winner, Kirk Thibeau in the #28, kicked off the 100 lapper with the lead position. Thibeau had some tough competition on his bumper all night between the #23 of Lonnie Sommerville, the #87 of Matt Harris, and the #52 of Shawn Tucker. Thibeau led the majority of the laps, holding the lead for 51 laps; although this didn’t mean the race was easy for him. Thibeau had to give away the lead to Sommerville on lap 27 and continued to fall back to third. Meanwhile in front of him, Sommerville and Harris started racing hard against one another, changing the leading position between the two of them many times. The Pro Stock race was a constant fight to the finish but in the end there can only be one leader. Kirk Thibeau made a late charge again for the lead to take home the first place win in tonight’s race, along with the series championship. Shawn Tucker followed Thibeau through the pack to finish in second while Lonnie Sommerville had to settle for third.
In the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman division, rookie drivers Cody Price in the #81 and Derek Christie in the #9 started off the race in the pole positions, racing strong off the start/finish line. Price held the first five laps and the swapped the lead with Christie. Both rookie’s figured they had it made, being at the front with no concerns until the #70 of Dave Biggar, a veteran driver, came into view of their mirrors. Biggar was passing cars left and right and gaining a lot of ground fast. By lap 13 Biggar has taken over the second position from a starting position of eighth. It only took him five laps to gain ground on Christie and take over the lead. On lap eighteen Biggar took the lead from Christie and didn’t look back. Biggar took home his second feature win tonight while Brian Gillespie in the #69 finished in the second spot and the #12 of Glyn Nott rounded out the top three.
In the Coast Tire Street Stock division the top three winners made some repeat podium finishes for the 2008 season. The #88 green machine of Brian Fox started the race in the pole position and finished the race in the exact same position. Fox wasn’t the only one having good luck this weekend. Matt Matheson in the #2 yet again finished in second place after his first place win last weekend and Robert Raynes took home a third place podium finish.
Next weekend Speedway 660 will host the second Enduro 200 of the 2008 season. Make sure you swing by the Geary woods Friday night for some WicKID action.
