Fredericton, NB - After an exciting night of racing last weekend, for the season opener, this weekend will be the first big event of the year.
Saturday, May 30th, under the lights, fans will see drivers from across the Maritimes and Eastern United States compete for Max 1 Advanced Synthetic “Best of the Best 100”, presented by COASTAL Blending & Packaging. This will be the first of a two race “Best of the Best” Series. Also racing Saturday night are the Coast Tire Street Stocks and Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman who will be battling it out for regular race points.
The “Best of the Best” Pro Stock Series is a two-race mini-series, each featuring 100 laps. Position points are awarded for each event with a series winner being determined after the second race on July 11th event. The winner ensures himself a free ride to the Peterbilt 250 on Speedweekend. Position points accumulated during the “Best of the Best” series are not added to the season long Irving Lubricants Pro Stock Division Points Championship. Instead, each driver who runs a “Best of the Best” series event will receive 30 points towards the overall points championship.
Race fans can expect to see CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour drivers as they have the weekend off from the tour. Drivers such as Shawn Tucker, Dave O’Blenis, and Lonnie Sommerville will likely make the trip to Speedway 660 for the big event. Several drivers from across the border in Maine have expressed interest as well including winner of both events in 2008, Kirk Thibeau and Travis Benjamin.
The drivers coming from other tracks will have their hands full with some tough competition from the regulars here at Speedway 660. Last weekend’s feature winner, Matt Harris, along with others like, Greg Fahey, Glenn Rasmussen will not give up the race easily. Also, racing in the ‘Best of the Best” series will be, long time Pro Stock driver Leon Christie. He will be making his first appearance with his Pro Stock for the 2009 race season.
The second and final “Best of the Best” series event will be held on July 11th with the Coast Tire “Best of the Best” 100, along with Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman 100. Lots of racing action packed into one night.
Aside from watching the Irving Lubricants Pro Stocks battle it out for 100 laps; fans will also see great racing in the other two divisions.
In last weekend’s Street Stock feature, Shawn Hyslop in the #99 came out in full gear and won the 20 lap feature. Brian Fox and Bill Belleville placed 2nd and 3rd, and they will be back to challenge Hyslop again this week. In the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman division, Wade Harris dominated the race and regained the top spot back from John Rankin to win the 30 lap feature.
June 6 is DQ Kids Day + District School Challenge. It will be a chance for our younger race fans to come out to Speedway 660 where there will be lots of exciting things for them to participate in such as Bouncy Castles from Go Go Gymnastics, face painting as well as the ever popular candy scramble. More details to follow for next week.
