DQ Kids’ Day…A Little Something for Everyone

Posted on June 7th, 2009

Fredericton N.B. - Speedway 660 hosted a full day of excitement for race fans of all ages. The excitement started well before the races, as drivers were ready for the opportunity to meet race fans at the pre-race autograph session in the pits.  Drivers took some time out from working on their cars to meet their race fans, hand out treats and pictures for the youngsters.   Drivers autographed everything from pictures, books, flags, and arms (yes arms!).  The youngsters also had the opportunity to fill their sweet tooth during intermission when they went trackside and filled up on candy with the legendary candy scramble. This is always a huge success with our young race fans. Other activities for our young race fans included bouncy castles from GO GO Gymnastics, face painting and fan giveaways.  Speedway the Moose and Curly Cue, the DQ mascot, were also on hand to meet and greet race fans.

There was also lots of racing action in the Coast Tire Street Stock Division.  Jack Lane came out strong, winning his heat and dash.  Rodney Ness started third in the 20 lap feature and quickly went up to the high side to battle Trent Noble for the lead.  Rick Cashol and Rodney Ness battled for many laps until they got together and both spun out with three laps to go.  Both cars retired to the pits with damages.  This gave Jason Shannon the opportunity to go on and win the twenty lap feature, holding off Shawn Hyslop and Robert Raynes, for second and third place podium finishes.

In the AOW division, Joe Hoyt dominated most of the evening finishing a strong second in his qualifying heat and taking the top spot in the 30 lap feature.  Mark Price and Mike “Sparky” Rayburn came from deep in the field to finish second and third.

In the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman Division, John Rankin was the big winner of the evening.  Rankin started out the 2009 racing season with mechanical problems before the race on opening day but went on to finish a strong second in the feature.  Last week, Rankin didn’t have as good of luck, with more mechanical problems.  After endless hours of working on the car this week, Rankin’s luck returns, giving him a win in his heat, and winning the 30 lap feature.  Finishing second and third were Matt Maillet and Brent Roy, who went charging past Robbie Fraser on the last lap.  Quite a birthday present for Brent Roy, the 19 year old “Camry Kid”.

In the Irving Lubricants Pro Stock division, Chris Duncan had a strong run, winning his heat and dash and finishing second in the 40 lap feature.  This is the first race Duncan has won at Speedway 660 in four years.  Brad Mann dominated most of the race, after taking the lead on the restart from Robert Tomlinson.  Greg Fahey challenged Mann for many laps until they got together, resulting in Mann spinning out and both cars were sent to the back.  The big black Dodge of Glenn Rasmussen took over the lead from Brian Gillespie, and never looked back.  Finishing a strong third was big Kevin Moore, who has been having a very good start to the season.

Next weekend will be a double header weekend with racing in the Coast Tire Street Stock Division, the Martins Home Heating sportsman division and the Pro All Star Series (PASS) 200 lap feature event. The PASS race will bring some very experienced drivers from the New England States. Some drivers that are expected to be racing on the Geary oval are Travis Benjamin, Cassius Clark, Johnny Clark, Kelly Moore, Derek Ramstrom, Ben Rowe, DJ Shaw, Chris Staples, and Kirk Thibeau.

Be sure to come on out to the Geary woods next weekend and check out Speedway 660 for some WicKID Family Fun!
